It is hard to believe that August is almost over and school has started up again. Last month we made a plea for donated school supplies and you all answered our request! Christopher Newport University students came to Edmarc and stuffed school supplies and even toys in back packs for our kids; providing 75 kids with all the supplies they needed to go back to school! Without the support of organizations like Capital One, Taylor Bend Zumba Crew and Skanska we would not have been able to give our families the items needed to ensure their kids have a successful school year! Thank you so much!!!
Then on August 5th we spent the day at Bayville Golf Club with The Cole Spencer Hilfiger Foundation. Donna, Jimmy and their entire family once again put on a first class tournament with the proceeds going to support Edmarc’s Bereavement Program. Heartfelt thanks to Donna, Jimmy and the entire Hilfiger Family.
So we are still in golf tournament mode. And on August 14th, Edmarc held its 18th Annual Edmarc Charity Golf Classic at Cypress Creek Golfers Club in Smithfield. The weather was picture perfect for the 144 golfers’ that joined us! We couldn’t have asked for a better group of individuals that played. Our volunteers were awesome and helped make sure the event ran smoothly; we could not have done it without them. Once again our friends at Elizabeth River Crossings stepped up as the Premier Sponsor for the event and with their help and the help of so many others raised an all- time high of $50,000! We look forward to seeing everyone again next year on August 13th, 2015 when we do it all again!!!
We’ve also made some new friends at New York Life, Old Point National Bank and Cintas Corporation. New York Life’s corporate philanthropic focus is to support children’s grief and bereavement. We are exploring opportunities with them to encourage employee volunteerism and hopes of securing grant funding for our bereavement program. Board and staff met with the fine folks at Old Point National Bank and are looking forward to having them join us in supporting current programs and events. Then we had lovely lunch meeting with Tim and Ben Jones at Cintas. Some of you might remember they helped us in a pinch last year during the holidays when we found ourselves without transportation for Santa and his elves. They are looking at becoming more involved with Edmarc and have decided to help with this year’s Hope Gala by donating a Washington Redskins excursion for the live auction and sponsorship too. For more information on the gala go to http://edmarc.org/hope-gala-1/
This month we also held our 23rd Camp M.A.G.I.C., an acronym which stands for My Active Grieving Instills Courage. There were 14 families who participated; 51 family members and 16 Edmarc staff and volunteers spent the weekend at the Eastover Retreat in Surry, VA. The weekend was filled with family time, therapeutic activities, a memorial service, a camp fire, and even s’mores. A recent Facebook post from one of our families sums the weekend up best, “Thank you for such a wonderful weekend. Our family had a chance to become closer, bond a little more, and share memories of Naithan. We’ll never forget this weekend or the memories made.”
From a news standpoint, we want to thank the Shopper for featuring Edmarc in its’ August issue. www.shopper.com
We’ve also been working with Sylvia Weinstein; Editor of the Oyster Pointer and her crew on a feature article for their October issue…can’t wait to see it. www.oysterpointer.net
