What Happened at Edmarc in November

November is the month of Thanksgiving … and we here at Edmarc are thankful for you: our families, supporters, volunteers and friends! Our staff and volunteers have put forth a tremendous amount of energy this month to make some special things happen.

On November 2, Coastal Virginia Magazine honored Edmarc, along with other nonprofits and businesses, at a reception at Virginia MOCA in Virginia Beach. Edmarc was one of the nonprofits recognized in the 6th Annual Giving Back Awards which honors organizations and groups who transform our communities and enrich the lives of others. We were very thankful for this recognition!

A few days later, we celebrated our 5th Annual Hope Gala, A Night in Disguise, at Granby Theater in Norfolk on November 4th. Excitement filled the room as 250 guests engaged in conversation and fun; the evening was nothing short of spectacular. International Illusionist, Krendl & Company, captivated guests with spellbinding acts of magic, acrobatics, circque performers, aerialist, mimes, human statues and more. We honored TowneBank and TowneBank Foundation for their commitment and dedication – both financially and through countless generous acts of support and volunteerism from the Towne family. We raised over $40,000 and want to give a shout out to our sponsors for making this possible: CTR Corporation, Sertoma Club of Norfolk, Berkshire Hathaway, Q.E.D. Systems and so many more businesses and organizations!

Repp Lambert and our friends at Northwestern Mutual teamed up with CP Shucker’s on November 6 for their “Shuck for Bucks” event and raised $7,500 for Edmarc. We were so lucky to have this group sponsor our Fall Festival for families last month and then follow up with having such a successful fundraiser for us. Thanks to everyone who supported Shuck for Bucks!

On November 9th Edmarc families gathered from across Hampton Roads for our Annual Day of Remembrance ceremony to honor and remember children who died. The Portsmouth Women’s Club was the perfect venue to host such a special evening. Heavy hearts and tears as well as some laughter accompanied the beautiful stories and remembrances families shared of their children. We truly appreciate the support of Baxter Simmons, Jr., Indian Creek Productions, the Portsmouth Service League, live music by Kevin Turner, and professional photographer Bob Harper for helping us make this a special night for staff, Edmarc families, and friends.

We continued to stay busy during United Way campaign season making presentations to friends with the City of Newport News in the Solid Waste, Wastewater, Street Maintenance and Human Services departments, Fairlead Integrated and Western Branch Diesel. United Way support definitely makes a significant contribution to our bottom line. Spread the word to others that it makes a difference when you designate Edmarc!

Every year, Edmarc tries to reduce some of the holiday stress (both emotional and financial) that accompanies Thanksgiving by trying to step in for families in need. It is because of the generous support of so many organizations and individuals throughout Hampton Roads that we were able to deliver 81 Thanksgiving baskets to our Edmarc families and our Peace by Piece families. A big shout out to GEICO for sponsoring 26 families! The Middle Peninsula Jeep Club also did another incredible job supplying and delivering to seven of our peninsula families. We were overwhelmed with the amount of support we received; it truly means the world to us. Special thanks to our incredible volunteers who helped organize the baskets, making sure each family had everything on the food list and to those who took time out of their Saturday morning to deliver the food baskets to families. Many, many thanks to each and every person and organization who helped us make Thanksgiving special.

We ended the month on a very special note. November 28th marked the 20th Annual Cole Spencer Hilfiger Golf Tournament. We joined friends and supporters at Bayville Golf Club on a beautiful fall day as Donna and Jimmy Hilfiger and all of their family organized another successful tournament. Edmarc is very grateful that the proceeds from this event help support our bereavement program each year.
