What’s Happening at Edmarc October 2014

What a busy month October has been for Edmarc!  From United Way speaking engagements, fundraising events, to the Fall Festival; the staff and volunteers of Edmarc have been working hard to raise awareness of the services we provide to families and the funds necessary to keep the organization running.

United WayThe United Way campaign is in full swing and Edmarc has been at a number of companies throughout Hampton Roads.  Special thank you to Q.E.D., Norfolk Southern, UPS, Sun Trust, Chubb Agency, First Team Automotive Group, Capital One, WAVY, and Fairlead Integrated for allowing us the opportunity to share the story of Edmarc and the impact the organization has on children and families throughout the region.

The weekends in October have been filled by participating in Festivals throughout Hampton Roads.  Edmarc was able to have display booths at the Children’s Festival in Norfolk, The Suffolk Peanut Festival, and Homarama.  We had some amazing volunteers at each of the festivals, handing out brochures, stuffed animals, and Edmarc balloons to everyone in the crowd! The Edmarc mascot, WAGS even showed up to join in on the fun.  Special thanks to our friends at Elizabeth River Crossings for providing us with the booths at each of these festivals!DF0_6540 (1)

The 3rd Annual Southside Friendraising Breakfast was held on October 7th at First Presbyterian Church, with 170 guests that attended.  None other than Hampton Roads own, Joe Flanagan hosted the morning.  Edmarc’s Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Linda Pegram, a Hematology and Oncology Physician shared her experience of caring for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.  The highlight of the event was a presentation from Laura Hersberger, Isaac’s mom.  The Hersberger’s came to know Edmarc prior to Isaac’s birth.  Laura was able to articulate the importance of Edmarc’s perinatal program; providing them with the education they needed to make some pretty hard decisions.  Although, doctors told the Hersberger’s Isaac would not make it; we were all graced with the presence of a beautiful, blue eyed, one year old little boy!  Their story was truly inspiring and touched the hearts of everyone in the room.  When it was all said and done, we raised $13,500 for Edmarc!  Special thanks to Debbie Jones and Sharon Cole who were the co-chairs for the breakfast; we couldn’t have done it without you!

The Deep Creek Ruritans hosted their Annual Golf Tournament on October 17th and Edmarc was once again named the beneficiary.  This special day remembers Jenna Noha, a little one we took care of for 17 glorious years.  A huge thank you to Joe Noha and all of our Ruritan buddies for once again putting on a first class tournament!

DF0_7333The 2nd Annual Hope Gala was held on October 25th at the Paradise Ocean Club.  Nearly 200 guests attended the Old Hollywood themed event.  The weather and view were spectacular; it truly was a night to remember!  Vanessa Coria, anchor of WVEC and Shane Graham, MMA announcer hosted the evening, while Derek Smith and Major and the Monbacks provided the entertainment.  Our very own Medical Director, Dr. Ralph Northam was presented with the first Hope Award, by one of our founding families, Dr. and Mrs. Allen Hogge.  The evening was full of live excursions, dancing, and even a silent auction.  At the end of the night, we raised $40,000!  Thank you to everyone that joined us the night of the event but, we want to give a special thank you to our Premier Sponsors: Cintas, Elizabeth River Crossings, Event Central and Towne Bank.  Without the help of these supporters and many, many more this event would not have been possible!DF0_7459

On October 27th Edmarc was transformed into a Fall Festival of festivities.  The Norfolk Jaycees once again hosted the event; filled with games, pizza, candy, toys, and lots of laughs!  The Edmarc house was full of super heroes, princesses, and many more kids dressed up like their favorite characters.  Everyone had an amazing time; one of our dad’s said it best, “Thank you so much, you have made our day, our week, our month!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!”  Can’t wait until we do it again next year, Jaycees!!!

We are in full holiday mode; getting ready to provide Thanksgiving food baskets for all of our families as well as gifts and food for the Christmas holiday!  We need sponsors and volunteers who can shop for food baskets, adopt families for Christmas  gifts and food, deliver food baskets, and wrap gifts.   Please contact our Community Resource Coordinator Kristen Jones at jonesk@edmarc.org or call the office at 757-967-9251.
