What Happened at Edmarc in February

The month of February was filled with heartfelt thank you follow up meetings with donors, speaking engagements and fundraisers!  We are so thankful for all of the staff and volunteers who spent countless hours this month representing our organization!

We met with our dear friends of SKW Contractors and Bayside Harley Davidson to thank them for their continued support over the years.  It is because of the generosity of organizations like them and so many others that we can provide the support our families need!

On average, between 30% and 40% of the total number of children and families we serve live on the Peninsula.

Although the breakfast is free to those who attend, there is still considerable cost involved.  In view of this, two of our volunteers, Amy Thorstad and Mary Cowling, started brainstorming ideas as to the most effective ways to raise the monies to cover that cost.  Two years ago Amy and her friends and family put on a fundraiser in memory of her daughter, Taylor, who was under Edmarc’s care during her battle of brain cancer.

Taylor had an amazing sense of humor and lit up the room with her unforgettable laugh, so it was only fitting to celebrate her life by holding a fundraiser at a comedy club.  The event raised enough money to underwrite the cost of the Friendraising Breakfast for several years to come.   Each year the breakfast is held in memory of Taylor Adkins and Baxter Simmons, Sr.  Baxter who was a long-time friend of Edmarc as well as a dear friend of Amy’s and a part of the Kiwanis Club of Mercury 64.  Amy served as this year’s host with her usual style and grace to the 100-plus who attended the breakfast.   From Dr. and Mrs. Allen Hogge, part of the original founders of Edmarc, guests heard the story of our humble beginnings, and learned about a program that continues to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families facing the greatest heartache of their lives.   When it was all said and done, we raised almost $13,000 to support the good work of the agency!

This month we also celebrated two new Edmarc staff’s babies.  Jeane’, our Bereavement Director and Kristen who serves as our Community Resource Coordinator are both expecting!  We are so excited for both of them and their families!

ghentOn February 27th, over 1000 participated in the 10th Annual Ghent Winter Bar Crawl.  This year, everyone came decked out in their favorite 80’s gear!  We saw a number of men sporting Don Johnson attire, lots of leggings and many showing off their best Flash Dance duds.  The weather was perfect for a Bar Crawl and at the end of the night Edmarc was presented a check for $20,000!  We would like to give a special thanks to Glenn, Pooya, and the entire Ghent Bar Tour Team for all their efforts in making this year a huge success; this truly was a top notch event!

Special thanks to the Kempsville Lions Club for inviting us to join them at their meeting and to Deep Creek Methodist Church for inviting us to speak to their congregation this month!  If you would an Edmarc presentation at your civic group or place of business please contact the office at 757-967-9251.
