January and February Happenings at Edmarc

When winter arrives, Edmarc takes a small pause for reflection after the busy holiday season. Of course all of the care team remains in full swing with admissions, discharges, daily visits. The compassionate caring of nurses and social workers never stops and is 24/7 every day of the year. But just as in your home, we put decorations away and return to routine. We begin looking ahead, thinking of how “hope for the journey” will unfold in 2018.

January ushered in a huge moment of impact. On Monday, January 22, Bankers Insurance (link) paid a very special visit to Edmarc Hospice for Children and presented the organization with a check for $50,000, representing the grand prize of the nationwide Chubb Charity Challenge. (link) Thirteen years ago – when Edmarc came to Olde Towne Portsmouth – Bankers Insurance was searching for a local organization to support and found Edmarc to be in line with their giving priorities.

We are so grateful to our dear friends at Bankers Insurance for choosing Edmarc as their charity when they were invited to play in the 2017 Chubb Charity Challenge! We are overwhelmed by the magnitude of this generous gift!  Our heartfelt thanks goes out to our dear friends at CHUBB and Banker’s Insurance buddies for this chubby check!

Our friends with the Sertoma Club of Norfolk invited us to join their meeting to update members with what’s happening at Edmarc. Sertoma has long been a friend of Edmarc and supported us over the years in so many ways. They raise a lot of their funds through their annual Spring Fever event  which is in its 43rd year – just three years older than Edmarc! We are grateful to Sertoma for supporting us and so many other local charities.

February 13th marked Edmarc’s 11th Annual Friendraising Breakfast held at the Paradise Ocean Club on Fort Monroe. This year about 140 guests attended the breakfast, including current and past families, board members, supporters, volunteers and staff and contributed close to $17,000 to support our mission! Beyond that, we made new friends and gained ideas for the future. Heartfelt thanks to all of the generous sponsors: Rob Cowling of Old Point National Bank for the sound system, Bob Harper Photography, Pat Mallon of Indian Creek Productions for the A/V equipment, Lovell Productions for videography, Rocket Media for printing, friends and family of Taylor Adkins and Kiwanis Club of Mercury 64.

Northern Shores Elementary School PTA organized their spirit week fundraiser to honor the memory of one of our Edmarc children. Adrian touched many lives and spread so much joy at that school. Each day of the spirit week highlighted something special to Adrian …from Superhero Day to Crazy Hat Day. The PTA well exceeded their goal of $500 when they presented Edmarc with a check for $1,400 on February 20. Thank you Northern Shores!

We welcomed John Baker and Cassidy Lewis from Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers (link) to Edmarc and received a $500 check, benefitting from their Facebook campaign to gain new likes. We were pleased to be one of the charities they support in our local community.

Edmarc loves to share our story out in the community. In January Joan and Allen Hogge presented to the Rotary Club of Warwick at City Center in Newport News, and Pat Garvey presented to the Wythe Exchange Club. Debbie Stitzer-Brame then was able to spend the day with Landstown High School STEM students familiarizing them with all of Edmarc’s programs and services and talked about strategic marketing. These students have participated in several of our holiday events with families. Finally, in February we had the chance to speak tot eh Hampton Roads Exchange Club at Rick & Libby’s in Newport News. If you have a group who would like to hear the Edmarc story, please let us know!

We’ve welcomed two new interns to Edmarc in February: Frederika Butler and Sneha Patel. We look forward to working with both of them over the next several weeks!
